Medicare | York PA

dds-medicareMedicare, like other aspects in 21st century America, is no longer as simple as it used to be. The decision used to be simply whether or not to buy a Medicare Supplement to go along with original Medicare, and, if so, which one.

These days, if you are a medicare recipient here in York County, PA, or in fact anywhere in the South Central Pennsylvania, you are now faced with choosing between original Medicare, Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage Plans, and Prescription Drug Plans. The good news is that now you have choices so Medicare coverage is no longer "One-Size-Fits-All". The bad news is that the choices can be confusing. But that does not need to be the case.

Here in York County, PA, at Dennis D. Smith Life and Health Insurance, we can help you sort through all the details.  But, first, you need to know the basics of Medicare.

Original Medicare is broken down into two parts – Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

Medicare Part A

This part covers hospital expenses and generally starts when you are admitted to the hospital. Part A covers the room and expenses directly relates to your hospital stay. Part A also covers blood, hospice, home health care, and skilled nursing care that are a direct result of your hospital stay.

Medicare Part B

This part pays where ever you need a medical provider's services – in a hospital, doctor's office, your home, home health care, skilled nursing facility, or hospice care.

Expenses Not Covered by Medicare

Medicare does not cover all the expenses you may face. Medicare Part A has a deductible for a hospital stay. Part A also has coinsurance for extended hospital stays and for skilled nursing care after 20 days. Medicare Part B has an annual premium deductible and a 20% coinsurance. Medicare does not pay anything toward custodial nursing care room and board, but Medicare will pay for the medical expenses you incur during custodial care.

Covering these expenses is where Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage Plans, and Prescription Drug Plans fit into the picture.
